Model Airplane questions.?

i love to make Model Airplanes (not the ones you fly the ones you paint and glue and look at) and im new at it (like only made 2) and im wondering if people are right when they say never to paint where you need to glue. Is this correct? if so is there anything i can buy or tricks to help making it so i can spray paint the parts on not get the paint on the parts that need gluing. also can you give tips on basically anything in making model planes (such as gluing, paint, ETC.) Thanks for your help.

Model paint does prevent / disturb the work of the model glues (styrene plastic cement). The glue actually welds the join because it melts the two pieces slightly.

I tend to paint my model’s base color while still on the sprue (the plastic molding “tree”)… just because I can hang the sprue in my spray booth and get good coverage.

Then when I have to glue… I take a #11 Xacto blade and gently scrape the paint of the surfaces where they join. I use Testors LIQUID cement rather than the tube-glue because it’s easier to control and apply with the brush.

Other things to have to make “good” airplanes:

- Rubber bands to hold pieces together while the cement sets
- Putty (I use Squadron brand) to fill gaps and seams
- Sanding sticks to clean up seams (I used ones from a beauty shop)
- Toothpicks for painting tiny details
- White-glue for glueing on windows and windscreens (plastic cement and crazy-glue can mar or cloud windows)
- Sprue snippers to remove parts from the sprue (finger nail clippers work, but you can get “real” nippers for about $5)

One thing to do… ALWAYS take a look at the instructions, the parts, and review the assembly in your head BEFORE you start. Techniques and skills will come with practice… I’ve been building for 35+ years now.
