Building Model airplanes?
What do you need to build a radio-controlled model airplane from scratch? And what knowledge is required?
A knowledge of how airplanes fly is essential here. You need to establish the center of gravity, the center of lift and the center of power. The control surfaces (ailerons, rudder, elevators) have to be the right size for the anticipated size, weight and speed of the Aircraft. You need to know what kind of airfoil to use (Clark Y, RAF15, etc) to balance lift with induced drag. You also need to offset both the tail fin and the engine to counteract the torque of the prop. Aircraft are complicated things and are built for pure function, ie there’s a reason they look the way they do. The distance from the CG to the tail fin and rudder is known as “moment of inertia. The longer this distance, the less force is needed to achieve a given effect, usually expressed in ounce-inches. Same thing with the ailerons. You also need angle of attack on the wings, usually around 2 degrees and a dihedral for stability. I could type for hours and still not cover everything.
